Are you curious about a career where you prepare through hands-on learning? Students entering 9th or 10th grade can learn about exciting career paths in technical and vocational fields at no charge.

 

Tech's expert instructors will help you evaluate a career you may want to pursue. More importantly, you will learn what kind of skills and education you need to succeed in these fields. (For students with special needs, Tech offers seven small classes that are customized to help you get a start on your career!) Read the following descriptions and then register below.

Automotive Technology
(Dix Hills campus)

Discover the inner-workings of the most common form of transportation on Long Island! Gain a hands-on introduction to electrical systems, brakes, suspension, and engine performance.

 

Construction

(Dix Hills campus)

Immerse yourself in the world of building where you need to think about projects from concepts to final products. Learn the proper care and safety of tools and equipment and how to work from plans and specification. Watch your ideas come to life as you complete your project!

 

Cosmetology
(Dix Hills campus)

Apply your interest in beauty and help others look their best. Join us for an introduction to hair styling and coloring as well as make-up, nail and skin care. Course includes hands-on training using mannequins and classroom instruction. You’ll discover some lucrative career paths in this field.

 

Fashion Merchandising/Design
(Dix Hills campus)

Students with a flair or interest in fashion will gain an introduction to both the creative and business side of this exciting industry. Learn to use the sewing machines to make your own project.

 

Marine & Motor Sports Technology

(Manor Plains campus)

Are fast boats, snowmobiles and motorcycles in your future?  Start learning how to maintain and service outdoor power equipment and marine engines in Tech’s small engine lab.

 

Vital Signs for Medical Assisting

(Dix Hills campus)

Bring a friend (or make a new one) and then practice taking vital signs as part of basic health exams. Students will learn to take each other’s blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration rate, and other administrative duties as the first step towards a health career.

 

Welding
(Dix Hills campus)

This class is sure to spark your interest in pursuing an exciting career where there are many jobs! After you learn the basics of oxyacetylene, arc, MIG and TIG welding, you’ll put on goggles and helmet to practice making your own weldments in Tech’s modern welding lab.

SMALL CLASSES for Students with Special Needs

 

Auto Maintenance
(Manor Plains campus)

Discover the world of auto body and auto mechanics while working hands on with expert instructors.  You will learn entry level skills to maintain and repair automobiles.

 

Building & Grounds
(Manor Plains campus)

Come build your own birdhouse. This class will introduce you to skills and techniques needed for general building and grounds maintenance. Apply these skills immediately to your own project and learn about opportunities in this field.

 

Building Trades

(Manor Plains campus)

Learn the basics of three of the most important trades involved in building a house: carpentry, plumbing and electrical. Gain hands-on experience as you build projects that will introduce you to the essentials of these time-honored occupations.

 

Cosmetology

(Manor Plains campus)

Apply your creativity to make others look their best.  Join this hands-on introduction to hair styling and nail care and learn how cosmetologists spend their days at the salon.

 

Food Services

(Manor Plains campus)

Come bake and cook with us!  Learn the basics of cooking soups, pasta, chicken and salads.  Enjoy meeting new friends and sampling the food you prepare.

 

Printing

(Manor Plains campus)

Work on a printing project from start to finish!  Learn all about the printing process including camera, stripping, platemaking, press operating and bindery equipment.  You will make your own project to bring home at the end of the class.

 

Electronic Manufacturing

(Manor Plains campus)

Have you ever wondered how electronic devices work?  You will gain an understanding of electronic circuits as you learn to use hand tools to construct a project you will bring home.

Cost

Students residing in the 18 school districts of Western Suffolk BOCES are admitted tuition-free.
