Get prepared for employment opportunities as a marine technical specialist in boat yards, marinas, and engine repair facilities. Courses meet two nights/week (one is for theory, one is for lab work). Instructors are experts from the recreational marine industry on Long Island.
Tech offers two program levels of training for marine technicians. Successfully completing both certificates completes your technical education and may lead to increased salary opportunities. A basic set of hand tools, multi-meter and diagnostic tools are the student’s responsibility. Total cost of tools for entire program is approximately $2,000. Textbooks additional.
Dates: Most classes meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
Location: Tech's Manor Plains campus, 200 Little Plains Road, Huntington.
Tuition: Tuition per module is $339 for the 2011-12 school year; tuition is subject to change July 1.
Tools: Tools are additional. A supply list is provided per module.
MARINE OPERATORS CERTIFICATE (Part I)
Complete the six modules for this program in nine months. Graduates can obtain valuable industry-recognized certificates attesting to their skills including Apprenticeship Boat Bottom Painting Certificate and Forklift/Strap Lift Certificate. Cost of tools for Part I is approx. $1,000. Textbook additional.
Module 1-Marina Operations (formerly Marina Management)
This class is a MUST for anyone entering or currently working in the marine industry. Learn excellent customer service skills, how to be a service writer and gain an overview of the marina as a business. Students will earn their Apprentice Boat Bottom Painting and Forklift/Strap certificates.

Module 2-Engine Technology I
This module covers the theory of two and four stroke internal combustion engines for both outboard and inboard engines with modern computer engine controls. Cooling systems will also be covered.

Module 3-Basic Marine Wiring
Learn DC theory, wiring practices, and battery systems. Emphasis is on troubleshooting basic DC circuits. Learn and use ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council) and NMEA (National Marine Electronic Association) standards.

Module 4-Fuel Systems
Carburetor theory, fuel and fuel delivery technology, fuel pumps, lubrication, boat fuel systems, safety standards and recommended practices.

Module 5-Electronics Installations
Most modern boats now utilize an array of electronic equipment. Learn proper installation of navigation and communication systems which is essential for accurate navigation and safety.

Module 6-Boat Yard Operations: 80hr Internship
In this final module for Part 1, you will spend 80 hours at a local boat yard or marina to practice hauling and launching, blocking, bottom painting, fork and travel lift training. No classroom meetings.

MARINE TECHNOLOGY CERTIFICATE (Part II) NEW
(Prerequisite: Marine Operators Certificate or marine trade experience)
Take six classes for this second certificate program, which can be completed in nine months, to gain additional expertise in this specialized field. The program will help prepare you to take the certification tests, which will be given at the end of the classes, from these engine manufacturers: Yamaha, Evinrude and/or Mercury.
To enhance employment opportunities, successful graduates of the program will be well-positioned to seek additional certifications from the American Boat & Yachting Council or the National Marine Electronics Association. The instructor will provide information about the additional preparation required for these certifications. Cost of tools for Part II is approximately $1000. Textbook additional.
Ignition Systems
Gain in-depth information on how modern ignitions systems work. Learn electronic ignition theory including capacitor discharge ignition (CDI) and how to troubleshoot using state-of-the-art test equipment.

Electronic Fuel Injection
Gain a thorough understanding of computerized electronic and direct injection engine operating systems. Heavy emphasis will be placed on hands-on computer diagnostic operations.

Drive Systems
Study all drive systems in the industry today as you learn to diagnosis outboard lower units, stern drives and inboard transmissions. Then, learn to rebuild these systems including shimming procedures.
