The Long Island Railroad is seeking qualified candidates for entry level through journeyman positions. The following coursework, along with specific job-related qualifications, will help prepare you for positions ranging from helper, laborer, assistant signalman, electrician, and mechanic at salaries ranging from $15-$25/hr. Satisfactory completion of this series of eight courses will enhance your qualifications for career opportunities with the LIRR. Qualification and hiring decisions are the prerogative of the LIRR.

Prerequisites: High school diploma or GED, plus relevant experience for the position.

 

RECOMMENDED SERIES

Blueprint Reading

Learn to read and interpret blueprints for all the major building trades. Topics emphasize commercial construction including scaling, symbols, legends notes and electrical theory. Textbook included.

 

 

Computer Comfort

Find out what computers can do for you. Learn to use a computer for word processing, E-mail and the Internet. This “hands-on” course will help you get off to a confident start. Prerequisite: Computer Kindergarten for Adults. 

 

 

National Electrical Code-Basic

This course covers the National Electrical Code, its application for tradepersons, and preparation for the license test. Textbook provided. NOTE: Before taking this NEC class, students must have five years experience as an electrician. For more information about the test, call the Office of Consumer Affairs at 631/853-4600.

 

 

National Electrical Code-Advanced

Prepare for the Electrician’s License Examination through the study of the National Electrical Code including: electrical safety, fire prevention, and electrical codes. Prereq: National Electric Code Basic. NOTE: Before taking this NEC class, students must have five years experience as an electrician. For more information about the test, call the Office of Consumer Affairs at 631/853-4600.

 

Electrical Installation I

Learn the requirements of wiring a house from the service entry through switches and receptacles. Students must provide hand tools, approximately $75, from a list provided by the instructor at first class. Textbook provided.

 

Electrical Installation II

A continuation of Electrical Installation I with emphasis on commercial and industrial systems and problems. Students may purchase additional hand tools from a list provided by the instructor the first night of class (approx. $50). Prereq: Electrical Installation I.

 

Electrical Motor Control

Theory and practical application; wiring diagrams for a wide variety of motor installations and controls. Textbook provided. Must complete Electrical Installation I & II before enrolling in this class.

  

 

Advanced Motor Control-Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)

An advanced class for the experienced electrician who has knowledge of motor controls and Windows for PCs. Review relays, timers, counters, assembling a PLC with switches, relays and lights, use of the programming software on a PC and learning to program a PLC. Ideal training for traffic controllers or maintenance electricians. Prerequisite: Electric Motor Control or relevant trade experience.

 

 

Industrial Electricity

Start with a review of basic electricity, Ohm’s Law, wiring materials, raceways & boxes, switchboards, panelboards, motors, generators, air conditioning & refrigeration, fire pumps, and move into single phase concepts and residential services, branch circuits and feeders, and calculations. Also covered are conductors and over current protection, wiring methods, transformers, special locations and three phase wiring systems. Knowledge of the National Electrical Code will be used in this course. Prerequisite: Electrical Installation I and II, or field experience. Textbook included.

   

 

ELECTIVES to enhance your employability

Commercial Driver (CDL)

Prepare for the NY State CDL written exam and a career as a commercial driver. Test-taking techniques and review of CDL laws and regulations will be covered. Dept. of Motor Vehicle booklets will be provided.

 

Electronics-Introduction

Learn the principles of electronic circuit elements, the purpose of resistors and capacitors, Ohm's Law, AC vs. DC, diodes, basic transistor amplifiers, solid state IC's, logic gates, filter networks and power supplies. Laboratory work will include current, voltage and resistor measurements and project building. Student responsible for purchasing Electronic Learning Lab (approx. $65). Textbook provided.
